We had our first meeting in December, and every month since - seven months! Our 8th is coming up this Thursday!

Over the last seven months of meetings, we’ve had more than 30 different people come together, and made interesting connections around the North Shore and the wider community. A summary of the things we’ve discussed and worked on:

  • Basics of municipal finances

  • Supporting and exploring ADUs

  • Participating in bike and pedestrian safety initiatives throughout the NS

  • Built out a website featuring crash data, and the cost to society

  • Asked local candidates for responses on Strong Towns issues, also published online

  • Increased our social media presence to expose more people to ST ideas

  • Cargo Bike Meetup, with a dozen or so attendees and their kids

  • Met with important groups like the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, 1000 Friends, retired city officials, Aging in Place advocates, state representatives

  • Met with other groups working tangentially on similar issues around municipal strategy

  • Began exploring an expert consultant for a walking audit of an important business district

  • Began work on a Fall collaboration around redlining in the region with other organizations

  • Making connections with local businesses who share our ideals of a prosperous town

  • Working on plans for zoning, ordinance, and committee improvements among all munis to improve effectiveness and outcomes

  • Observations where our built environment is harming us - heat islands, water runoff, pollution, reduced biodiversity, and more.

  • Attended the Vision Zero conference in Milwaukee to meet and connect with other people doing smart work in the region

  • Established new connections with local staff

  • Directly participated in local street design projects already in progress

We have many ideas in mind, and welcome people of all ages, abilities, and knowledge levels. As our saying goes we want all people who want “a good life in a prosperous place”.

This could mean many things - you want stronger municipal finances, want taxes kept low, appreciate more diverse housing options and flexibility as you age, want to be able to leave the car home more easily, would like to see more native plantings and less boring asphalt, or more biodiversity - the possibilities are vast!

Please join us every third Thursday at 7pm, at Stone Creek Coffee in Whitefish Bay. We typically venture off to a nearby establishment afterward for continuing discussions, usually much less on topic! You are welcome to join that as well!
